How to Keep Your Hair Healthy in Fall

Just like skin, our hair also needs constant care. With the weather changing in fall, it is important to make sure we are keeping our hair healthy and preventing it from drying, getting split ends, and overall hair damage. I have become very conscious about my hair over time and I make sure to give my hair whatever it needs to stay healthy and strong. Here are some of my tips I have learned over the years to keep my hair healthy in low levels of humidity!

1. Massage Your Scalp Often

If there are things I have learned from my South Asian mother is hair remedies. Growing up, I would often watch her sit down and massage her hair once a week. At that time, I didn’t know much about the benefits but turns out it is one of the best ways to keep hair healthy. When you massage the scalp, it increases hair thickness by stretching the cells of hair follicles. The massage also increases the blood flow to the scalp, thus promoting hair growth. On top, massaging your scalp with oil will keep your hair hydrated and prevent it from drying out in the fall.

The next question that most of you may ask is what oil I use to massage my hair. The quick answer is whatever works for your hair. I have gone from one hair oil to another but have narrowed it down to 3 oils that suit my scalp and they are castor oil, Moroccan oil, and tea tree oil. NOTE: Tea Tree oil is an essential oil and you SHOULD NOT use more than 2-3 drops on your scalp as it can irritate it. I usually mix a few drops of tea tree oil with castor oil or Moroccan oil and massage it thoroughly on my scalp. I then let it sit for 30mins before I wash it off.

2. It’s Ok to Cut Your Hair

I am saying this from experience because I didn’t like cutting my hair and that was my way of making up for the years my parents didn’t let me grow my hair as a kid. I hated bob cuts and all I ever got was bob cuts! But it’s good to at least trim if you don’t want a big chop towards the end of every season. Summer heat can often damage your hair so getting a fresh trim will prevent your hair from further getting split ends.

3. Try Out a New Hair Care Routine

Just like we are dealing with high levels of humidity in summer, we are dealing with the exact opposite in winter. Our hair tends to dry up in low levels of humidity. So it is important to use a shampoo and conditioner that gives our hair extra moisture. I personally loved Caviar as it was nourishing and gave my hair the hydration it needed. Moroccan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner is also on my list of favorites. I have also used Oribe and the argan oil in it had me hooked. Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil Conditioner was also a nourishing conditioner that left my hair soft and breezy. Lastly, I am currently using John Frieda Frizz-Ease Shampoo and Conditioner and it’s giving me that extra moisture for fall.

Some great tips. I’m a huge fan of argan oil and I usually mix my castor oil with coconut. I have never thought of adding a few drops of tea tree oil to the mix.

Tea tree oil is amazing in so many ways. It helps fight dandruff, moisturizes hair, and also stimulates blood circulation on the scalp for hair growth!
