How to Build a Better Wardrobe in 2021

Having a better wardrobe is not as easy as it sounds. A lot of times, having a better wardrobe gets mixed up with trends and fast fashion and is sometimes hard to differentiate between what you need and what you want. I felt it was important to write up this post and share my experience on how to build a better wardrobe in 2021 without wasting too much money. Without further ado, let’s go ahead and have a look at it below:

1. Focus on Essentials

Growing up, I was always spending money on pieces that were either on sale or were trending. Although they can be nice to have at times, they are definitely not essentials. Essentials are pieces I can wear everyday not on one or two occasions. Once you have those essentials, you put little effort in dressing up as your head will naturally turn to those pieces when getting ready. Fast forward now, my focus in my wardrobe is to make sure I always have my essentials no matter what. For me, a good cotton t-shirts and dress shirts, 2-3 pair of jeans and 2-3 light outerwear are essentials in my wardrobe. Ever since I got my hands on these 100% cotton shirts from Amazon, they have been my go-to as they are so easy to style and are super affordable.

2. Invest in Long Lasting Blazers

There are blazers I have been wearing for as long as 5+ years because I believe investing in quality long-lasting blazers. When I started my blazer journey, I invested in neutral colors like black, beige and white and gradually added more in time. But those neutral blazers are what I wear the most when I have zoom meetings, conferences, or coffee meet-ups.

3. Don’t Forget Statement Pieces

Other than wardrobe essentials, you should always a few to handful of statement pieces. For me personally, statements pieces include cutout or shoulder-work tops, coats and designer handbags.

4. Add Bold Colors in Your Closet

Although I like my neutrals, I also love my colored pieces as well. As we are close to spring, wearing colors is the best way to freshen up your look. It’s true neutrals will instantly elevate your look, but having colors just adds more life to the look.

5. Buy Trends with Longevity

I am definitely guilty of buying pieces just to hop on trends but with time, I have also learned to invest in long-lasting pieces. For example, neutral blazers, coats, sweater dresses and designer bags is something I will never stop wearing so I make sure to invest in a good one if I find it.

This is a really great post! I love how your break it down – I get seriously overwhelmed sometimes when I think about doing a big closet update, so I appreciate how you’ve made it digestible 🙂

Sometimes less is more and if you factor in costs per wear and invest in quality pieces and are done having children, your wardrobe choices can last a lifetime!
