My Pregnancy Skincare Routine

When I found out I was pregnant, I didn’t really look into the skincare products I was using. Although I should have (My extreme morning sickness took most of my day)! But nonetheless, I caught up towards the end of my second month. Taking care of the skin routine is as important during pregnancy as it would be if you weren’t pregnant. Luckily, I haven’t gone through major skincare changes but I did want to make sure I was using products that were harmless to me and the baby. Before I talk about about pregnancy skincare routine products, I wanted to highlight chemicals that are super harmful for your body and should be avoided during pregnancy at all cost.

Chemicals to Avoid During Pregnancy

A lot of the ingredients in my pregnancy skincare routine are ok to use but some ingredients should be avoided at all cost. Remember! Any ingredients that can penetrate through the skin are harmful. Here are some of the major chemicals:

  1. Retinol: Mainly found in anti-aging and prescribed acne medications, retinol has been linked to causing birth defects for developing babies. It is also listed on ingredient labels as retinoic acid, retinyl palmitate, retinaldehyde etc.
  2. Hydroquinone: Mainly used in skin lightening treatments to treat dark marks/patches. The chemical is known to get absorbed into the skin and cause birth defects to the fetus.
  3. Ammonia: Ladies, if you are looking to do touch ups or change hair colour, please AVOID it during pregnancy as it can irritate your skin. If you are really needing to do touch ups, look for ammonia-free hair dyes. Ask you stylist about the alternatives.

Other ingredients to avoid are Thioglycolic acid (used in hair removal creams), Dihydroxyacetone (AKA DHA found in tanning lotions/creams) and Botulinim toxin (AKA BOTOX).

My Pregnancy Skincare Routine

I will be honest! I haven’t made major changes to my skincare routine but while trying/using new products, I ALWAYS read and look for harmful chemicals (mainly the ones written above). My current skincare products I am using currently are facial cleanser, face cream,  vaseline lotion and coconut oil for hair. As you can tell, I have reduced the amount of skincare products as I didn’t feel comfortable using too many products during pregnancy.

Facial Cleanser: Seaweed Deep Cleansing Facial Wash – I am a huge fan of ‘The Body Shop’ products and this one happens to be my fav! I have tried their other facial cleansers but I would highly recommend this!

Moisturizing Face Cream: Currently obsessing over NIVEA 2-in-1 Moisturizing Primer – Been using it over the last month and as always, NIVEA does it magic!! I love their scent and soothing sensation after application.

Body Lotion: Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Radiant Lotion – Vaseline is a wonder magic and when used as a lotion, it can do wonders to the skin =)

Skin/Hair Oil: Marc Anthony True Professional 100% Coconut Oil – When in need of oil, I have been using 100% coconut oil mainly for my wet hair NOT so much on skin. It works and smells great =)

I was using eye cream and serum before pregnancy and will continue post pregnancy. At the moment, I just want to focus on what I think are important products. I also wanted to add that not all products work perfect on skins as every skin-type is different. If you are trying out a new product during pregnancy, start SLOW and use it every other day to see how your skin is reacts before continuing. These precautions also apply if you are breastfeeding as well.

Hope you find the blog useful. If you have any questions, comment BELOW your concerns/advice, I will try to my best to respond =) Also, SWIPE LEFT to shop my favourite products:
